If you’re trying to grow your pest control company on social media, you might feel overwhelmed by all the tools out there. Cameras, microphones, editing software, scheduling tools — where do you even start?

The truth is, you don't need much to begin. I built a following of over 140,000 subscribers on YouTube, tens of thousands more on Instagram and Facebook, and most of our early content was filmed and edited on a phone.

Here’s exactly what you need to get started.

Do You Need Scheduling Tools?

No. Especially in the beginning, you shouldn’t worry about scheduling software. For YouTube, in particular, I recommend posting manually. It performs better when it looks like you uploaded it directly.

Later, when you’re posting three to five times a week, tools like Lumly can help. It lets you upload your video once and post across all platforms. But don’t start there. Post manually at first and learn the process.

What About Editing Software?

You don’t need to buy anything fancy. TikTok and Instagram both have built-in editors that work great. If you want a little more control, use CapCut. It’s free, easy to use, and has more features. My nine-year-old uses it all the time. Don’t overthink editing. You can do it all on your phone.

Do You Need a Camera?

No. You do not need a professional camera. Most of my early videos were filmed on an iPhone. Honestly, they still are. The newest phones have great video quality, and they make it easier to shoot, edit, and upload quickly.

Get a simple lav mic for about $30 to improve sound quality. That’s more important than video quality early on.

Should You Use a Tripod?

Yes, especially if you’re filming alone. A basic tripod that folds up and fits in your bag costs about $30 to $40. I bring mine everywhere, and it lets me film content anytime, anywhere.

Is Drone Footage Worth It?

If you want higher production value, you can get a DJI Nano drone for about $200. It follows you around and records great video. This is helpful for action shots, vehicle footage, and technician work in the field. You can find used drones online even cheaper. But only consider this once you’re already posting consistently.

You Don’t Have to Do It All Yourself

If you don’t want to handle the tech side, get help. My kids help me film when we travel. You can involve your team, your family, or even hire someone local. A college student or teenager who understands content can be a great asset.

You don't have to be the expert. Just make sure the content gets made.

The Biggest Mistake to Avoid

The biggest mistake is waiting until everything is perfect. Most people delay posting because they feel unprepared. But the hardest part is just hitting record.

Your first videos won’t be great. That’s normal. Post them anyway. Consistency matters more than quality in the beginning.

Set aside one day a week for content. Even four hours once a week will take you far if you stay consistent.

Final Thoughts

To get started, all you need is a phone, a simple microphone, and a tripod. That’s it. Don’t overthink the gear. Just start posting and get better as you go. If you stay consistent and make it fun, the results will follow.
